Safety is a Core Value

Our Safety Must Win Battles

As an organization, we have identified three Must Win Battles as it relates to safety. Each of these plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the well-being of every member of our team.

Must Win Battle #1

  • De-energize power circuits, lock them out, and test with a multimeter before proceeding.
  • Remember: "It Ain’t Dead Till It’s Tested Dead"
  • Ensure your lock is installed on multi-employer, group lockouts, and you have the only key.
  • Never work on energized conductors or terminals at 50 Volts or greater.
  • Do not use non-contact voltage detectors; they can provide incorrect readings.
  • Work on circuits above 240 Volts requires specialized arc flash training and PPE.
Must Win Battle #2

  • Use a 4-to-1 ratio of wall height to distance from the wall; ladder must extend 3 feet over the elevated surface.
  • Tie off the top and/or bottom to prevent movement.
  • Have another employee hold the base during the initial climb if possible.
  • Use both hands when ascending or descending; hoist equipment after climbing.
  • Keep your belt buckle between the side rails; do not extend outward.
  • On step ladders, stay two steps down from the top.
Must Win Battle #3

  • Maintain space around your vehicle for quick escapes.
  • Follow the 2-second rule in the city and 3-second rule on highways.
  • Continually scan ahead and check mirrors every 5-7 seconds.
  • Let aggressive drivers pass by moving over.
  • Avoid all distractions, including phones, tablets, and navigation devices.
  • Use hands-free calls only if brief and allowed by local laws.
